What is Red Blend?

A ‘blended wine’ is a wine type from two or more grape varieties. A red blend is specifically made from two red grape varieties. Usually winemakers do this to give a wine more balance. Red blends are usually characterized as being a slightly sweet, fruit-forward and easy to drink. Red Blends are typically made from a blend of grapes such as cabernet sauvignon, merlot, zinfandel, syrah, and grenache, but the combinations can vary. Red blends are usually medium to full-bodied and have moderate tannins, allowing them to be enjoyed young or aged. Many red blends have flavors of plum, blackberry, raspberry, and cherry, with hints of spice and chocolate. Try pairing with foods like grilled meats and vegetables, tomato-based dishes, and soft cheeses.
